Autophagy can play a role in cancer prevention and cancer treatment. One of the most profound discoveries made by researchers is that, because autophagy promotes the death of cells, it can also be a preventive measure for cancer. This research that was published in the journal Nature, goes on to say that autophagy can be described as a “tumor-suppressing pathway” because it acts like a checkpoint that prevents cells from dividing in an uncontrolled nature (Salk Institute, 2019).
The process starts with molecular tips on the end of chromosomes called telomeres that shorten each time a cell divides. The function of telomeres is to protect the end of chromosomes and to prevent them from becoming frazzled due to multiple cell-dividing processes. However, as the telomeres become shorter and shorter, and when they reach a point where they are almost completely gone, the cell enters a crisis situation. During this crisis situation, the unprotected chromosomes can likely fuse and subsequently become dysfunctional, and this is a trademark of some cancer types. What autophagy does in this situation is cause cell death, which means that these dysfunctional cells can no longer divide (Salk Institute, 2019).
To conduct a thorough study on the role of autophagy and cell death in crisis cells, the researchers also took an approach where they allowed cells to divide while observing the systematic shortening of the telomeres until the cells reached the crisis status. This time, autophagy was not used as a mechanism to stop the process by inducing cell death, so the cells kept on dividing and causing damage to the cellular DNA. This kind of damage is the same phenomenon one would observe in cancerous cells. The researchers concluded that autophagy’s cannibalistic and reprocessing nature is an excellent way to protect cells from dividing themselves into a crisis situation (Salk Institute, 2019).
By subjecting the human body to autophagy, even if it is in a relatively healthy state, cell crises can be reduced or even prevented, which is a direct pathway to the development of cancerous cells. How incredibly awesome is that?
